OHIO STATE ASTHMA EXPERT PRESENTS AT NATIONAL CONVENTION

Dr. John Mastronarde, of the division of pulmonary, allergy, critical care and sleep medicine at the Ohio State University Medical Center and director of its asthma center, is participating in a program engaging professions within the college football community to discuss the main reasons for sudden collapse during summer conditioning sessions, the recognition of student-athletes in crisis, outline condition specific recovery strategies and understand emergency response protocols. Sponsored by the American Football Coaches Association, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports and the National Athletic Trainers Association, the convention will include a presentation by Mastronarde that reviews implications of off-season conditioning as it relates to exercise-induced asthma. Mastronarde holds numerous national posts including president of the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors and chair of the training committee of the American Thoracic Society.

OHIO STATE PULMONOLOGIST RECEIVES GRANT FROM FOUNDATION

Dr. Jonathan Parsons, of the division of pulmonary, allergy, critical care and sleep medicine at the Ohio State University Medical Center and associate director of its asthma center, has been awarded funding from the American College of Sports Medicine Foundation for researching the prevalence of exercise-induced asthma in college athletes. Parsons has been designated principal investigator for this project and has published other research in many peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Asthma, Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise and CHEST. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society and an expert in asthma on NetWellness, an unbiased, non-profit consumer health information service delivered on the Web through the collaborative efforts of the University of Cincinnati, The Ohio State University, and Case Western Reserve University.
