Combining the attributes of a community hospital and an academic medical center
 |
| The new and expanded Emergency Department at University Hospital East is one of the many enhancements made to the hospital during the last 10 years. | In April, University Hospital East will celebrate its 10th anniversary as part of Ohio State’s Medical Center. During those 10 years, much has changed as the hospital has grown into a nationally recognized provider of world-class medical services.
“We’re proud of the role we play as both a community-based hospital and a provider of high-quality healthcare services,” says Elizabeth Seely, executive director of University Hospital East. “Our patients benefit from the convenient, warm, caring atmosphere we have here at East, while at the same time receiving care from some of the best physicians and researchers in the country.”
The Medical Center’s orthopedics and sports medicine program, based at University Hospital East, is consistently ranked by U.S.News & World Report as one of the best in the country. Surgeons at East perform more than 400 joint replacements annually. They also treat OSU athletes and “weekend warriors” for a variety of sports injuries, including everything from broken bones to torn knee ligaments to sprained backs.

Being a community partner is an important part of University Hospital East’s mission. “Each summer we hold a Community Day, where our neighbors can have free health screenings,” says Seely. “We also have outreach programs for the schools—each summer we offer a camp where local high school students can learn about careers in medicine. We're committed to being a good community partner.”
