Ohio State Physicians, Researchers Receive National Honors and AwardsPosted 6/8/2009

MILLER APPOINTED TO U.S. ARMY EXTERNAL REVIEW PANEL

Dr. Sidney Miller, director of the Ohio State University Medical Center’s Burn Center and current vice president and president-elect of the American Burn Association, has joined the external review panel as a member for the United States Army Combat Casualty Care Program, Combat Critical Care Engineering, Advanced Capabilities for Emergency Medical Monitoring, Automated Critical Care Life Support, and Medical Knowledge Engineering research programs. The external review panel is developed by the American Institute of Biological Sciences for the United States Army.

O’BRIEN NAMED TO BOARD OF NATIONAL ORGANIZATION

Dr. James M. O’Brien, a pulmonologist and critical care specialist at the Ohio State University Medical Center, has been named to the board of directors of the Sepsis Alliance, a national organization dedicated to curing sepsis through education, early recognition and effective management initiatives. O’Brien’s responsibilities include setting policies, operation oversight and promoting awareness the organization’s mission.

OHIO STATE LUNG RESEARCHERS RECEIVE AWARDS FROM NHLBI

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health has awarded grants provided from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to Drs. Virginia Folcik Nivar and Estelle Boyaka, both researchers from the division of pulmonary, allergy, critical care and sleep medicine at the Ohio State University Medical Center and Ohio State’s Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute. The grant awards will focus on additional research related to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and cigarette-smoke induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Researchers will obtain small tissue samples from donors during surgery to examine the molecular pathways involved in the development and progression of these diseases in order to better understand the diseases and assist in developing improved therapeutic treatments.
