Ernie’s Café at Dodd Hall Inpatient Rehabilitation was recently recognized with the Best Customer Service Concept Award by Food Management Magazine.
As a sit-down restaurant, Ernie’s Café allows patients to dine in a group environment rather than alone in their room. This dining experience provides patients the ability to order food from a menu while also giving them the opportunity to increase their social interaction skills and improve their confidence with eating in a group. The goal is to make patients more comfortable, resulting in improved appetite and nutritional intake, which ultimately helps the recovery process. It is also an innovative approach to helping resolve the depression and alienation which some patients feel due to the extended stays their rehabilitation requires.
In off hours, Ernie’s Café hosts social activities such as cooking demonstrations and movie nights. An organic garden outside is cultivated by some patients as part of their rehabilitation.
