At The Ohio State University Medical Center, we are committed to providing high-quality, personalized healthcare services to all of our patients, regardless of their ability to pay. We also recognize that the billing process, which begins after patients are discharged, can seem complicated, and we want to make it as easy as possible for you to understand. The following information is designed to clarify your hospital bill, the portion of care that is billed to your insurance company, and financial assistance options available to eligible patients. Hospital Billing to Your Insurance: Before we bill you, we send a bill to your insurance provider, including Medicare and Medicaid and any secondary insurance providers. You will receive a statement that will show you the balance that is pending with your insurance company. These statements are strictly information and are not bills. After your insurance company pays its obligated amount, the remaining amount will be billed to you. You may pay this amount in full or make payment arrangements through Ohio State University Medical Center’s Central Business office at (614) 293-2100 or 1-800-678-8037. Financial Assistance: We want to make sure all patients have access to the quality healthcare services of Ohio State University Medical Center, and we are committed to working with you and your family to obtain appropriate financial assistance. We’re here to help. Please let us know if you do not have health insurance or cannot pay your bill in full. We encourage you to contact our Office of Financial Counseling, where staff members are trained to assist you in determining whether you might qualify for an assistance program (the most common programs are listed below). Our financial counselors can help you complete applications for government-sponsored programs, describe other financial assistance programs that can help offset costs, or structure workable payment plans for required medical treatment if you meet certain financial criteria. These options include helping you:
Other Assistance: In addition to the HCAP program, Ohio State University Medical Center offers additional sliding scale assistance based on Federal Poverty Guidelines. To help determine the appropriate assistance programs for which you may qualify, you will need to provide details about your job, income, resources, insurance coverage, family size and other information. We realize some of these details may be of a sensitive nature, but it is necessary that you provide them to enable us to help you. We are committed to respecting you and your privacy during this process. If you are uninsured but do not qualify for Medicaid or other assistance programs, you will still receive a discount on medically necessary hospital charges. Patients with insurance who receive medically necessary services that are not covered by their insurance may also be eligible for this discount. If you are interested in learning more about these programs, please contact the Financial Counseling Department at (614) 293-0860 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. A financial counselor can assist you with the application process. You will be screened for all Medicaid programs as well as HCAP and charity. If you appear to be eligible for Medicaid, one of our Medicaid vendors will help you complete the application and assist you through this process with no additional charge to you.
