Exercise: Before Starting an Exercise Program

Starting a daily exercise program:

It is always important to consult your physician before starting an exercise program. This is particularly true if any of the following apply to your current medical condition:

  • chest pain or pain in the neck and/or arm
  • shortness of breath
  • a diagnosed heart condition
  • joint and/or bone problems
  • currently taking cardiac and/or blood pressure medications
  • have not previously been physically active
  • dizziness

If none of these apply to you, start gradually and sensibly. However, if you feel any of the physical symptoms listed above when you start your exercise program, contact your physician right away.

If one or more of the statements listed above applies for you, see your physician before beginning an exercise program. An exercise-stress test may be used to help plan your exercise program.

At the OSU Center for Wellness & Prevention, our most popular program is our general fitness membership. This membership provides you access to aerobic and body toning classes including yoga and water fitness classes, use of the aerobic and strength training equipment, orientation to exercise equipment, and development of a personalized fitness program in a group setting. If you’re new to the fitness environment or even if you are a seasoned athlete, you will appreciate knowing there is always an exercise specialist available to answer your questions and provide you with guidance and encouragement.

Our fitness facility offers a wide selection of exercise equipment options including treadmills, cross-trainers, stair masters, upright and recumbent bikes, rowing machines, upper body ergometers, free weights and weight training machines.

In addition, we offer fitness evaluations for individuals who may not be getting the results they want from training. Through fitness, strength and flexibility testing, we can help you determine your anaerobic threshold and training intensities. It’s an easy way to discover your true fitness potential.

Whether you want to learn healthy eating habits, shed extra weight or just want to keep active, the trained staff of the OSU Center for Wellness & Prevention is focused on helping you to achieve your personal best.
