The Prematurity Program is unique to The Ohio State University Medical Center and is directed by Jay Iams, MD, a nationally recognized maternal fetal medicine specialist.
It is a one-of-a -kind, multidisciplinary outpatient program for women with a history of preterm birth, multiple gestation, cervical surgery, uterine malformations or preterm labor in the current pregnancy. Women in this program have many urgent and special needs. Hetty Walker, RNC, the program nurse coordinator, is dedicated solely to this select group of patients.
The Prematurity Program provides individualized:
- Prepregnancy counseling
- Preterm labor symptom instruction
- Cervical surveillance with transvaginal ultrasound
- Comprehensive prenatal care
- Medication instruction, including Progesterone (17P)
- Health education, smoking cessation and healthy lifestyle programs
- Social Services
- Nutritional counseling by a registered dietitian
- Breast-feeding information
- Group support
- Research opportunities
Patients in this program:
- Learn the signs and symptoms of preterm labor
- Learn about individual choices that may decrease their risk of preterm birth
- Learn about complications associated with a preterm baby
- Learn about lifestyle changes important to a healthy pregnancy
- Learn about the latest prematurity research
- Gain support from women with similar concerns
