For many people, young and old, driving represents one of the most important aspects of daily living. The OSU Medical Center’s Rehabilitation Driving Program, the only one of its kind in central Ohio, adopts a customized approach to driving that has restored mobility and enhanced independence for individuals with a range of disabilities resulting from stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, congenital disorders, multiple sclerosis and other neurological disabilities. The OSU Medical Center Rehabilitation Driving Program assists disabled persons in learning the safe operation of an automobile by evaluation, driver simulation, and on-road training using specially adapted vehicles. Our staff also provides recommendations and specifications for car and van adaptive equipment.

Through the Community Re-entry Program, we teach patients how to adapt and function in various environments, including their community, home, work and school. By simulating these environments, the patient is able to "practice" independent living skills in a controlled, safe setting and gain the confidence and experience necessary to overcome barriers.Using the theory that it is more effective to learn by doing, we treat our patients using practical life examples. Whether venturing out to the bank, store, a restaurant or the park, patients gain confidence in confronting barriers such as street curbs, doors and stairs independently yet with the support of peers and caregivers. The Community Re-entry Program is available as both an inpatient and outpatient service.
