Rehabilitation Services has specialized programs to meet the needs of patients -- from the treatment of acute injuries through physical therapy. Our specialized programs -- brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke and orthopaedic rehabilitation -- enable patients to reach their full potential.
Our programs are accredited by the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission (CARF) and the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). In fact, our stroke rehabilitation program is the first in Ohio to be awarded CARF accreditation and we're the only rehabilitation center in Ohio to have accredited programs in stroke and brain injury.
At OSU Medical Center, successful rehabilitation is a team effort. As active members of our team, patients and their families help set comprehensive treatment goals that we work toward together. Our team includes rehabilitation physicians, rehabilitation nurses, patient care resource managers, physical and occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, social workers, rehabilitation psychologists, dietitians and other physician specialists. We believe our team approach results in better outcomes, quicker recovery times, increased satisfaction and stronger communication among patients, families and the care team.
In measuring our outcomes, our programs consistently score above the national average in the level of independence our patients receive in self-care, mobility and cognitive thinking.
We provide services to patients in a variety of locations including: University Hospital, the OSU James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, UH East and the OSU Ross Heart Hospital.

Stroke Program
The Stroke Rehabilitation Program at OSU Medical Center has helped thousands of people regain their independence and improve their quality of life after a stroke. People with moderate or severe neurological impairment and dysfunction due to stroke or other focal central nervous center disorders benefit from our comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation services. Our Stroke Rehabilitation Program is currently only one of four in the country to receive accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
Our long-term goal is to maximize improvement in each patient’s functional abilities. Our rehabilitation team develops an individualized program for each patient, which may include:
· self-care skills
· bowel and bladder function
· nutritional intake and swallowing
· mobility and locomotion
· speech and language
· cognitive function and leisure skills
The rehabilitation process is a coordinated team effort in which the patient, family, physicians, nurses and therapists work together to meet individual rehabilitation goals. Our team also educates patients and their families about the long-term issues related to stroke and stroke prevention and creates a discharge plan that helps patients return to home, work and community.
Our interdisciplinary team includes physicians, certified rehabilitation nurses, occupational and physical therapists, speech language pathologists, social workers, psychologists and other specialists who work with an outcomes based approach to helping patients achieve the highest quality of life.

Orthopaedic Rehabilitation
The Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Program serves patients with total joint replacements, injuries from trauma, bone diseases and amputations. Because these injuries and illnesses often limit self-care and home skills in addition to mobility, our team approach helps to speed recovery and the return of independent living. Our outpatient rehabilitation program helps those with sports or active-lifestyle injuries as well as joint replacements.
