Functional Neurosurgery 

Many common neurosurgical illnesses involve disorders of the spine or intracranial disorders such as tumors, but epilepsy and movement disorders (essential tremor, Parkinson's disease and others) can also be treated by neurological surgeons. Even though medical- and pharmacologic-based therapies still represent first-line treatments for functional disorders, greatly improved imaging, microneurosurgical techniques and understanding of the pathophysiology of these disorders have placed neurosurgeons at the forefront in treating these afflictions.
