Methotrexate lowers your immune system and has a potential benefit in treating Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Weekly doses of Methotrexate may delay progression of MS. Methotrexate may be taken with other disease modifying drugs or as a single therapy.
- Each Methotrexate tablet is 2.5 mg. Take prescribed number of tablets on the same day, ONCE A WEEK.
- Keep Methotrexate away from excessive heat, light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
- You must have bloodwork drawn to monitor for side effects. Bloodwork includes a CBC, ALT, AST and Creat. Your doctor will tell you how often this must be completed.
- Folic Acid 1 mg daily will be prescribed while taking Methotrexate to prevent any red blood cell abnormalities (anemia). This is a prescription strength supplement. Over the counter preparations are not adequate.
- Your physician may order a Chest X-ray before you start treatment and then yearly.
- Alcohol can increase the risk of liver problems while taking Methotrexate.
- Check with your doctor before taking any of the following over the counter medications. These medications may increase the effects of Methotrexate.
- Aspirin
- Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin)
- Naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve, Naprelan)
- Notify all your doctors and your pharmacist that you are taking Methotrexate. Prescription drugs may also increase the effects of Methotrexate.
- Antibiotics (Sulfa, Bactrim,Septra)
- Phenytoin (Dilantin)
- Anticoagulants (coumadin)
- You may take Tylenol as needed.
- If you are a woman, you should not get pregnant. Methotrexate may harm your unborn baby. Please discuss with your doctor.
- You may be more sensitive to sunlight, so avoid excessive sun exposure, tanning booths or sunlamps.
- Methotrexate may cause temporary thinning of hair
Side Effects Needing Immedtiate Attention
- Black, tarry stools
- Vomiting blood
- Fever over 101 degrees Fahrenheit
- Convulsions (seizures)
Side Effects Needing Attention as Soon as Possible
- Dark or bloody urine
- Blurred vision
- Sores in the mouth or on the lips
- Chronic cough not related to an infection or allergy
- Stomach pain
- Unusual bleeding
- Confusion
- Diarrhea
- Unusual bleeding or pinpoint red spots on skin
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Pain in the joints
- Unusual swelling of feet or lower legs
- Unusual tiredness or weakness
- Yellow eyes or skin
