Program Overview
Some individuals have mental health issues that need more treatment than traditional outpatient services, but do not need an overnight inpatient hospital stay. Other individuals may have needed the safety of an inpatient stay and need to continue daily treatment following their return home. The OSU Harding Adult Partial Hospitalization Program offers a hospital-based intensive treatment option to meet these varied individual needs.
We treat adults who have mental illnesses that affect their ability to function at home, at work and in the community, who need more than traditional outpatient services. We meet with prospective patients to determine if they meet criteria for the program. We also encourage patients to actively plan and participate in their treatment.
Signs to Look For
We treat patients with a variety of diagnoses and related symptoms. Most frequently, patients report an increase in:
• Isolation from family and friends
• Changes in sleep patterns
• Depression
• Irritability and anger
• Anxiety
• Absences from work, or inability to go to work
• Thoughts of suicide or homicide
The OSU Harding Adult Partial Hospitalization Program
Our goal is to assist patients in maintaining or returning to their adaptive level of functionality in the community. Individuals participate in structured, supportive, group-based treatment supplemented with individual, couple or family sessions. With patients’ written consent, we are in contact with their therapists and doctors to coordinate treatment. We also plan services after discharge that will build on patients’ strengths and continue their progress.
The Personal Treatment Plan
The Adult Partial Hospitalization Program operates from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, not every person needs the same amount of care. Patients’ schedules are individualized based on need. People attending treatment will:
• meet with a psychiatrist for an evaluation and medication management
• set goals for their treatment and make a plan for care following discharge
• learn about their diagnosis and their medications
• learn and use cognitive behavioral therapy to understand and modify their patterns of thinking, feeling and behavior, and the physical manifestations of these
• learn and practice symptom management and relapse prevention skills
• participate in individual, couple, family and group therapies
Family/Friends
We know how important support from family and friends is in a person’s recovery. Family involvement is emphasized throughout our program; family members or other support people are included in as many phases of evaluation and treatment as possible and appropriate.
Treatment Day Schedule
The program provides treatment in a full- or half-day format. Most people start with a full day to quickly prevent worsening of symptoms. As individuals make progress in their goals, they usually move to a half-day schedule. If appropriate, individuals may be directly admitted to a half-day treatment schedule.
