Living With

The ultimate goal of OSU heart treatment is to return patients to a quality of life that is equal to – or perhaps even better than – their lifestyle before cardiac disease. Our cardiac rehabilitation program and support groups help achieve that goal. For assistance locating a service or physician, call (614) 293-5123 or toll-free (800) 293-5123.

BENEFITS OF CARDIAC REHABILITATION:

  • Improved cardiovascular function
  • Improved fitness
  • Reduced heart disease risk factors
  • Improved nutrition
  • Increased muscle tone, stamina and activity level
  • Reduced fear or anxiety about health
  • Increased sense of well-being and enjoyment

OSU CARDIAC REHABILITATION PROGRAMS:

  • Phase 1 often begins in the hospital under direct medical supervision. Patients receive education about their heart condition and how to change lifestyle habits to help prevent cardiovascular events. Once the patient’s condition is stabilized, the patient works with the cardiac rehabilitation team to get active again in preparation for going home.
  • Phase 2 often takes place in an outpatient setting under the supervision of an exercise physiologist trained in cardiac rehabilitation. Patients typically take part in a medically supervised exercise program. In-depth education about the risk factors for heart disease and counseling on lifestyle changes are continued. Patients may attend 12 to 36 sessions of exercise, education and counseling, depending on the individual’s condition and progress.
  • Phase 3 is designed to help people maintain their commitment to a healthy lifestyle that includes ongoing exercise, education, risk factor management and lifestyle behavior improvements. For those with significant heart disease risk factors, who have not experienced a major heart episode, this phase may be entered with a physician's recommendation in order to lessen the heart disease risk.
