In 2009, a burn occupational therapist and avid runner started an annual 5K run/walk to raise money for Ohio State’s burn development fund. Money raised through this event assists patients with dressing supplies and burn garments and also provides non-physician members of the burn care team with opportunities to attend educational conferences.
Burn Survivor Family Camp
Since 2007, Ohio State’s Burn Center has held an annual burn camp for adult burn survivors and their families. The camp usually takes place in August and gives survivors and staff members from the burn center the opportunity to spend a weekend at Camp Joy in southern Ohio. Adult survivors and their families are able to connect with people who have faced similar challenges. Camp is made up of group activities and games, challenge courses and free time for swimming and hiking, as well as support group time for the adult burn survivor. This is the only camp of its kind in the nation.
Annual Burn Center Golf Outing
In conjunction with the Central Ohio Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, the first Monday in October is reserved for a golf outing fundraiser for Ohio State’s Burn Center.
SOAR (Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery)
This program offers support from other burn survivors and their families and it is offered at Ohio State’s Burn Center. People who have successfully recovered from burn injuries help others move from being a burn victim to a burn survivor.
Burn Survivors who are peer supporters have gone through a screening process, are hospital volunteers, and attend a training program. If you are interested in this program please contact Becky Coffey at 614-293-6084, or Rebecca.Coffey@osumc.edu.
Buckeye Burn Support Group
We believe that your burn care should continue long after you leave the burn center. That is why the Buckeye Burn Support Group was formed. The purpose of this group is to give burn survivors and their families an opportunity to meet, discuss issues and give and receive support. Medical and/or mental health professionals will facilitate this goup.
The group meets on the Third Monday of every month.
