COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center leads the region with 10 ranked specialties, including cancer and cardiology, in the latest “Best Hospital” rankings by U.S. News & World Report. Wexner Medical Center is among only a handful of hospitals in the country ranked in multiple specialties.
The “Best Hospitals” rankings are featured online at www.usnews.com/besthospitals and are based on several criteria, including clinical outcomes, patient safety and reputation. The annual ranking of the nation’s top performing hospitals by U.S. News & World Report has become a leading resource for consumers and a benchmarking tool for health care providers and insurers.
In the 2013-14 rankings, Ohio State is recognized as a leader in cancer care; cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat (otolaryngology); geriatrics; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; pulmonology; physical rehabilitation; and urology.
Ohio State also was named high-performing in gastroenterology, gynecology (women’s health) and orthopedics. Specialties designated as “high-performing” scored extremely high and perform nearly as well their nationally ranked counterparts.
“For the 21st consecutive year, the U.S. News & World Report survey highlights the outstanding care provided in a broad range of specialties by our physicians, nurses and staff at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center,” said Dr. Steven G. Gabbe, CEO of Wexner Medical Center. “This consistent recognition of our dedication to providing our patients with the best healthcare available reflects well on our medical center, the university and the Columbus community.”
In addition, Nationwide Children’s Hospital was ranked in 10 pediatric specialties in U.S. News & World Report’s 2013-14 Best Children’s Hospitals. Nationwide Children’s serves as home to the Department of Pediatrics for Ohio State’s College of Medicine, with many of its medical staff and physician scientists holding faculty positions at the university.
The “America’s Best Hospitals” issue, considered by many consumers and health care industry analysts as a leading indicator of quality care and performance, is compiled using data collected annually from more than 5,000 U.S. hospitals of varying sizes.
