COLUMBUS, Ohio
– The largest neurological society in the world for neurosurgical professionals
has named Dr. Ali Rezai, a neurosurgeon and researcher at The Ohio State University
Wexner Medical Center, as its new president.
The
Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) has more than 8,000 members around the
world and advances neurosurgical education and innovation by facilitating
scientific discovery and its translation into clinical practice.
Rezai has served
on the executive committee of CNS for the past 11 years and has been actively
involved in numerous capacities within the CNS including scientific program chairman
of the annual meeting.
In July, Rezai was
named director of the Medical Center’s Neuroscience Program where he leads the integration,
coordination and collaboration between Ohio State’s
clinical, research and educational programs in neurology, neurosurgery,
physical medicine and rehabilitation, psychiatry, in addition to neuroscience
research.
Rezai,
who holds the Stanley D. and Joan H. Ross Chair in Neuromodulation at The Ohio
State University, is widely recognized for his treatment of Parkinson’s disease
and other movement disorders using deep brain stimulation. In addition, he is highly
acclaimed and widely respected around the world for his research in the area of
neuromodulation and its use for treatment of various medical conditions including
depression, addictions, obsessive compulsive disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, obesity
and traumatic brain injury.
He is past-president
of the American Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and current
president of the North American Neuromodulation Society.
Rezai
left the Cleveland Clinic in 2009 to join Ohio State.
He has published more than 140 peer reviewed articles and more than 30 book
chapters.
In addition, Rezai
has been the principal and co-investigator on eight grants from the National
Institutes of Health. He holds 30 patents.
