COLUMBUS, Ohio – A senior vice president at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has been selected chief executive officer of The Ohio State University Health Plan, Inc.
Daniel B. Vukmer will be responsible for leading Ohio State’s affiliated health plan corporation, which provides health plan and wellness services to the university’s 58,000 faculty and staff and their dependents. Vukmer begins his new role in October.
As senior vice president of business development and chief legal counsel for the insurance services division at UPMC, Vukmer was responsible for all aspects of business strategy and development of the insurance division, which contained six insurance companies with 2,000 employees and annual revenue of $3.8 billion. The division administered health and medical benefits to 1.8 million members.
“Dan has had a key role in the development of several innovative programs that have increased business opportunities for UPMC and led to greater efficiencies,” said Dr. Steven G. Gabbe, chief executive officer of Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center. “His visionary approach to the development of preventive, comprehensive and personalized health plans will lead to many new opportunities for Ohio State.”
Ohio State’s Health Plan is an affiliated entity of the Ohio State University and reports administratively to Wexner Medical Center.
Larry Lewellen, vice president of care coordination and health promotion at Wexner Medical Center, said he is very excited to have Vukmer leading the Health Plan. “His experience and track record are superb, and he is an impressive leader.  I very much look forward to working closely with him.”
Vukmer joined UPMC's Insurance Services Division in June 2003 and during his career at UPMC has been responsible for all aspects of legal compliance, litigation, legal strategy, contracting, government relations, business development and risk management.
Prior to joining UPMC, Vukmer served as a senior attorney with such firms as Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue and Klett, Rooney, Lieber & Schorling.
He received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and computer science from Juniata College in 1984 and law degree from Widener University School of Law in 1993, where he graduated cum laude and served as executive managing editor of the Law Review.
The Ohio State University Health Plan, Inc. provides network and medical management services to more than 58,000 OSU faculty, staff and their dependents. An affiliate of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, the Health Plan offers wellness services through the university’s Your Plan for Health initiative, including biometric health screenings, health coaching, flu vaccinations, and educational programming. The Health Plan also offers the Ohio State 27/4 Nurse Line and the Ohio State Employee Assistance Program.
In addition, the Health Plan administers the Rx Ohio Collaborative, an expanding benefit initiative for Ohio employers that provides cost savings on prescription drugs. The OSU Health Plan also provides wellness services to external customers.
