COLUMBUS, Ohio
– Dr. Edmund F. Funai has been named chief operating officer of The Ohio State
University Health System. A recent recruit from Yale-New Haven
Hospital
, Funai will be
responsible for the operations of all clinical areas within the Health System,
which includes the patient care services of The Ohio State University Wexner
Medical Center.
Prior to coming to Ohio State
in 2011, Funai was chief of obstetrics at Yale-New Haven
Hospital and interim
project manager of the hospital’s roll-out of its electronic medical records
implementation program. In addition, he served on numerous clinical leadership
committees and chaired several committees for the board of the Medical Centre
Insurance Company in Vermont,
a $1-billion specialty insurance company, which
provides medical professional and general liability insurance coverage and risk
management services to several academic medical centers including Johns
Hopkins and Yale University School of Medicine.

unai
also has worked in practice management and compliance and has advanced training
in Six Sigma quality improvement processes.

officer for the OSU Health System, said Funai brings to the position the
clinical and business perspective of Yale-New
Haven Hospital,
another successful organization.
“Ed inherently understands what is
required to ensure all of our clinical operations produce the outcomes necessary
to support the highest quality care,” said Geier. “His expertise will be
invaluable as we plan, implement and continuously improve our operations.”
Funai is currently the associate
dean for administration in The Ohio State University College of Medicine,
professor and vice chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology, and
director of Ohio State’s Division of Maternal Fetal
Medicine. He will retain the associate dean position in addition to his new
role.
Dr. Steven G. Gabbe, CEO of Wexner
Medical Center, said Funai is a talented and insightful leader with experience
in each of Ohio State’s mission areas.

the energy and expertise to lead our clinical programs to higher levels of

At Yale School of Medicine, Funai was
professor and associate chair for clinical affairs in the department of
obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences. He also was section chief
for maternal-fetal medicine. During his tenure as section chief, the number of
faculty tripled in size and routinely led the nation in both the quality and
quantity of presentations at national meetings.
He received his bachelor’s degree
cum laude from the University of Notre Dame, double majoring in philosophy and pre-professional
studies. He was a Trustee Scholar at New
York Medical College, where he received his medical
degree in 1992.
The Ohio State University Health
System comprises University Hospital, Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital,
University Hospital East, Ohio State‘s Harding Hospital, OSU Rehabilitation
Services at Dodd Hall, the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute
and a primary care network with offices throughout Columbus and central Ohio.
