It's All About You

All of us at The Ohio State University Medical Center are happy to bring you this special women's health edition of health1. There are more than 16,000 of us — your relatives, neighbors and friends — who are passionate about the work we do at central Ohio's only U.S. News nationally ranked medical center.

Our women's health services encompass the entire continuum of care across a woman's lifetime, from early adulthood, through maternity and parenting, menopause and later years. Our medical staff — with more physicians listed in "Best Doctors in America" than any other central Ohio health system — range from the most broadly skilled family medicine and internal medicine specialists to the most elite subspecialists and one-of-a-kind experts in the region and nation.

We are international pioneers in developing a new form of health care called P4 Medicine, which is predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory. Central to this new model of care is a map of your unique genetic makeup, an analysis of your disease risk and a personalized lifetime health plan that puts you in control of your health. We are here to guide you, to assist you in following your health plan and to provide the treatments and therapies that keep your health risks in check.

We're building a new 17-story James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute and critical care tower, set to open in 2014, that will promote this new model of care. In collaboration with leaders at Ohio State's Fisher College of Business, all of our services and departments are actively engaged in reviewing their programs to provide and support P4 Medicine and to find new ways to put our patients and their families at the center of all we do.

Throughout this issue, you will find examples of Medical Center staff and patients offering their insights into living a healthier life. Women are the primary caregivers for their families, but they must also take the time to care for themselves.

I've been an obstetrician and gynecologist my entire professional career and I have been blessed to have strong and inspiring women as mentors and role models throughout my life. This issue is a celebration of how far the health professions have come in recognizing the unique needs of women and the vital role they play.
