Remembering Our Champion
After a decade-long battle with breast cancer, Stefanie Spielman died November 19. Her tireless devotion and advocacy for more research into the prevention and treatment of breast cancer has touched countless lives. With her husband Chris, she started the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute shortly after her diagnosis in 1998. They later established the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Patient Assistance. To date, the funds have generated more than $6.5 million, helping translate laboratory discoveries into effective treatments for breast cancer patients. Stefanie also served as an active and vital member of The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute Foundation Board.
In 2000, Stefanie and Chris established Stefanie’s Champions. The Champion Award honors one of the most important factors in cancer treatment: the loving and healing presence of a devoted caregiver. Stefanie gave the first Champion Award to Chris after he put his professional football career on hold to care for her when she was first treated. Stefanie leaves us a legacy of hope that will last for generations.
