Letter From Dr Gabbe

Exceptional

Dear Friends,

I am pleased to present the first of three special editions of Discovery magazine for 2011. This issue – the first – focuses on our people, the second will document the state of personalized health care initiatives at Ohio State and around the world, and the third will look at innovative ways to train 21st century physicians and healthcare professionals.

The 20 exceptional people profiled in this issue are a small sample of the talented faculty who practice here at The Ohio State University Medical Center, in our classrooms, our research laboratories, and in our offices, clinics and hospital-based patient care units. We are proud to call each one of them our colleague and to work beside them in an environment of collaboration and mutual respect.

Since my return to Ohio State in 2008, we have launched initiatives to attract the best and brightest researchers, clinicians, trainees, staff and students to the Medical Center because they, in turn, attract more of the same exceptional talent. We have either begun or revitalized programs to recruit and retain more women and minority students and professionals. Our Leadership Academy and a new Center for Faculty Advancement now in development affirm our commitment to individual and team success. Our initiatives in professionalism promote mentorship and leadership at all levels of our organization.

Exceptional people create exceptional results, and in the fulfillment of our mission to improve people's lives, this attention benefits our patients, our profession and society as a whole. Thank you for partnering with us in this important work.

Sincerely,

Steven G. Gabbe, MD
Senior Vice President for Health Sciences, The Ohio State University
Chief Executive Officer, The Ohio State University Medical Center
