One of the themes you will see in each of the feature stories in this issue of Discovery and in many of the news briefs is the extraordinary breadth of collaboration our faculty and staff enjoy with experts from the many other colleges that comprise The Ohio State University. Our partnerships with Ohio State’s renowned Fisher College of Business, the College of Engineering, College of Food, Agriculture and Environment Sciences and others, have produced innovative dual degree programs and breakthrough research studies.
On the page 33 of this issue, OSU President Gordon Gee articulates the impact that an institution of Ohio State’s size and stature can have on our home state, the nation and the world. He and other University leaders launched an ambitious culture-change initiative last year to empower every University employee to take responsibility for promoting team and University effectiveness and improving collaboration across work groups and departments.
The Ohio State University Medical Center represents more than half of Ohio State’s employees and annual revenues, and as such we take seriously our role in advancing collaboration and a culture of unity and innovation here. We are one of the most comprehensive health sciences campuses in the United States, with Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Optometry, Dentistry, Public Health and Veterinary Medicine, plus a School of Allied Medical Professions, located adjacent to one another. We are also located on one of the largest single-enrollment campuses in the United States, offering a range of degree programs and faculty expertise virtually unmatched in the world. Clearly our size is a strength.
The Medical Center is a vital and dynamic classroom, a research laboratory of great proportions and a University outreach program that touches lives in the most intimate and fundamental ways locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Our “In the News” summaries on page 5 capture only a few of the many examples of our broad reach and influence. We are proud to be not only one of the world’s great medical centers, but The Ohio State University Medical Center.
