“There are plenty of opportunities in our everyday work lives to identify lapses in professionalism. It’s our goal to help physicians and staff develop skills that can help maintain professionalism, especially when emotional stakes are high. Among the key skills are:
• understanding when a crucial conversation is to come or is under way,
• understanding your style under stress,
• identifying mutual purpose – mutual respect,
• detecting victim stories, villain stories or ‘helpless’ stories, and
• addressing the fight-or-flight response.”
