Donald Jones, MD, and his wife, Pat Parrish, met at The Ohio State University Medical Center while Don was an intern and Pat was a radiology technician. They have been married for 52 years.
“My wife and I chose to give to the University and the Medical Center,” Don explains, “Because a lot of good things in our lives started with Ohio State.” Between them, only Dr. Jones’s mother went to college, but both were encouraged by their families to pursue higher education. Don and Pat have four children, all of whom have received master’s degrees and are currently pursuing successful careers. “We are truly blessed and are happy to be able to give back to the University,” states Mrs. Jones.
Over the years, the Joneses have generously supported many areas of the University. In the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, they created a designated professorship currently held by David Cohn, MD, and with an ultimate gift of $1 million from their estate, the professorship will be endowed in perpetuity. They also established a fund that supports a visiting professor and lectureship. They created a scholarship fund in the College of Medicine, which has already awarded scholarships to two students, and a scholarship at Ohio State’s Newark campus for an undergraduate student who plans to pursue a career in medicine. In addition, they created two scholarships in athletics and are true Buckeye fans, still attending all home football and basketball games.
The Joneses have devoted their time and energy to many programs at the University. Dr. Jones served on Ohio State’s National Advisory Council for the Newark campus for six years and Mrs. Jones served on the Advisory Council and Board of Trustees for Ohio State’s Newark campus for 16 years. “Ohio State continues to improve as a university and as a medical center. We want to be part of the University’s growth by contributing to programs that are already in place,” says Dr. Jones. He also served as a member of “The Power to Change Lives” campaign Scholarship Committee, and both he and Pat were chosen to speak at the most recent College of Medicine Scholarship Reception.
Although they have ties to other organizations for philanthropic giving, they chose to give to Ohio State out of
gratitude for the education and training they received and the great opportunities that continue to be offered to
Dr. Jones had an obstetrics and gynecology practice in Newark, Ohio, for 34 years with three other physicians who trained under the same faculty at Ohio State.
