The Ohio State University Medical Center Nurse Internship offers the unique opportunity for newly-licensed graduate nurses to successfully transition from students to professional nurses. The number of new Nurse Interns for each group is always based on the anticipated clinical area needs and the projected growth of the Medical Center.
All Nurse Interns participate in the year-long AACN-UHC Nurse Residency Program that is a year-long professional development and leadership program designed to increase new graduate confidence, autonomy, and satisfaction that has proven to result in increased quality of patient care and increased patient safety.
Based on the continuing expansion of Medical Center clinical programs, especially the Signature Programs the Nurse Internship has grown to the following specialty tracks:

- Medical-Surgical Specialties: Neurology, Infectious Disease, Gastroenterology, Urology, Trauma, Peripheral-Vascular, Surgical, Pulmonary, Corrections Health Care, Orthopaedics and Bariatric

- Operating Room
- Dodd Hall Rehabilitation
- Cardiothoracic at Ross Heart Hospital
- Acute Care in a Community Setting at UH East
- Oncology at The James
- Psychiatric Nursing track
The Nurse Internship Program facilitates socialization into the Medical Center, hands-on clinical experiences, and in-depth classroom learning. Nurse Interns are mentored throughout the program to increase both personal and professional growth and development through:.
- A comprehensive paid onboarding process
- Admission to the Nurse Internship Program is a competitive process with applications offered for a Winter, Spring, and Summer Internship Program each year. Placements are limited and based on the projected needs for new graduates in each clinical area.
- Formal online, classroom, and simulation activities specific to chosen specialty track
- A variety of precepted clinical unit rotations and experiences designed to meet individual nurse needs
- Weekly meetings with the Nurse Preceptor and Nurse Educator to assess progress and provide direction.
The Nurse Internship Program offers exclusive opportunities for you to:

The qualifications for application to the Nurse Internship are:
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
- Successfully passing the NCLEX
- Experience in the clinical area of choice is preferred
- Baccalaureate or masters degree in nursing
Nurse Residency Program
All new graduate nurses participate in the University Healthcare Consortium (UHC) Nurse Residency, which is an additional professional development program that continues your development after you have completed the Nurse Internship. It guides you beyond the advanced beginner role by supporting your professional development and leadership abilities.

The Nurse Residency enhances the education and skills provided in the Nurse Internship and facilitates continued professional growth and development throughout the first year of nursing by teaching analysis of evidence, encouraging in-depth clinical applications, supporting effective decision-making and facilitating participation in an evidence-based project. Nurse Residents are assisted to thrive in the fast-paced, academic medical center environment and report a strengthened commitment to nursing, enhanced self-confidence and feelings of competency, a safe environment to share feelings and concerns, and support for your individual professional development plan.
