The Ohio State University Medical Center has a long tradition of leadership in heart care, education and research. Our exceptional team of heart-care experts are working together to take heart care to a new level – from vascular surgery and heart transplants to the very latest treatments for heart failure.
For example, Ohio State’s Medical Center is the lead site for a study with the potential to revolutionize the way heart failure patients are treated. A preliminary study was recently completed on HeartPOD™, an implantable sensor with a palm-sized external computer that allows patients to make real-time adjustments to medication dosing. OSU Medical Center was the first center in the U.S. to implant the HeartPOD™ monitor.
Emerging technologies are often pioneered here, such as cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), which allows for non-invasive high-resolution images of a beating heart and blood vessels from any angle without radiation, and cardiovascular computed tomography, which provides cross-sectional X-rays to create three-dimensional blood vessel images.
Patients also benefit from the innovative research at Ohio State's Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute, one of the nation’s few free-standing facilities devoted entirely to the research of diseases affecting the heart, lungs and blood vessels.
Translational research within the Institute enables physicians to take discoveries directly from the lab to the bedside. Heart patients have access to 50-60 cardiac clinical trials offering the most scientifically advanced treatment models. Our research initiatives are focused largely in the areas of Heart Failure, Ischemic Disease, Transplantation, Arrhythmias/Electrophysiology and Vascular Disease.
Because of our educational mission, OSU Medical Center physicians traditionally have trained the majority of practicing physicians in Ohio and have continuously trained colleagues nationwide in such new procedures as robotic surgery and minimally invasive techniques.
