U.S. News & World Report

The Ohio State University Medical Center stands out once again as a top Ohio health-care organization, with seven medical specialties named as among the best in the country – including a top-15 ranking for the cancer program and top-10 ranking for the rehabilitation program – in the latest U.S. News & World Report magazine. This is the 15th consecutive year the magazine has named Ohio State’s Medical Center one of “America’s Best Hospitals.” Only 173 of the almost 5,500 U.S. hospitals evaluated received scores high enough to be included in the most recent issue.

The recently released 2009 U.S. News & World Report “America’s Best Graduate Schools” rankings place Ohio State's College of Medicine 30th in Research among America’s 125 medical schools and 20 schools of osteopathic medicine. This is a gain of one position over the 2008 rankings and a gain of 14 positions since 2003. Ohio State's College of Medicine ranked 12th among public institutions.

'Most Wired' Hospitals

OSU Medical Center is ranked among the nation's 100 "Most Wired" hospitals and health care systems list for eight consecutive years. Recognition is given for the use of computer technology to improve patient care and safety. 

ANCC Magnet Recognition

Ohio State University Medical Center is proud to have the first hospital in central Ohio to achieve Magnet Recognition, one of the highest possible honors awarded for nursing excellence. Currently, Ohio State’s Ross Heart Hospital and University Hospital are designated Magnet hospitals.

To be awarded Magnet status, our hospitals went through an extensive review process and were found by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Recognition Program to meet rigorous standards of excellence in nursing and patient care.

The 'Best Doctors in America' List

The most recent list of “Best Doctors in America” includes more than 250 faculty members at OSU Medical Center. The list is considered to be one of the most recognized and credible resources available to consumers for selecting a physician.Of the approximately 420 doctors from the Columbus area on the latest list, 259 are Ohio State faculty members at one or more of the OSU-owned or affiliated hospitals. The Best Doctors Inc. database for 2007 contains names of about 41,000 doctors in the United States, all of whom have been chosen through a peer-review process in which thousands of doctors have participated. Only physicians who earn the consensus support of their peers are included in the list.

Medical Center Among Best Places to Work

Ohio State University Medical Center is proud to be included in Columbus Business First's annual rankings of central Ohio's Best Places to Work. More than 110 local companies were nominated for the award this year; 86 were identified as viable candidates; and then employee surveys were conducted for the 35 finalists. These surveys were scored and the finalists ranked by company size.

Top Performer Recognition

Ohio State University Medical Center is one of only five U.S. academic medical centers recognized as a "Top Performer" by the University HealthSystem Consortium. The Consortium, an alliance of 97 academic medical centers and 153 of their affiliated hospitals, singled out Ohio State's Medical Center for delivering high-quality, safe, effective and equitable care to patients.

Hospital Choice Award

Ohio State University Medical Center has received a Hospital Choice Award presented by the American Alliance of Healthcare Providers. The award recognizes hospitals that have a proven track record in patient care as well as those that have developed a collaborative relationship with physicians and health-care organizations in the community. OSU Medical Center was one of approximately 110 hospitals across the nation to receive the award. Distinguished Hospital Award

The Ohio University Medical Center was honored as a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence by HealthGrades Report, an independent healthcare ratings company. Critical care, pulmonary, stroke and vascular are the specialties Ohio State is singled out for. HealthGrades evaluated hospitals based on Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' mortality and complication data.

Other Accolades and Achievements

OSU Medical Center is proud of many more accolades and achievements, some of which include:

  • The 116-bed Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital opened in 2004 as one of the few university hospitals in the country dedicated entirely to the study, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
  • The cancer program is one of only 39 in the country to be designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute.   • One of the first five U.S. medical centers approved by the FDA to use robotics for general surgery in July 2000, Ohio State University Medical Center was also the first U.S. medical center approved by the FDA to use robotic surgery to perform heart bypass surgery.
  • The nation’s first Beckman-Coulter second generation total laboratory automation system was installed at OSU Medical Center.
