Hi. Our new academic year is in full swing, and we already have a great number of accomplishments to celebrate.

I’m here at Command Central for our IHIS conversion and I want to thank each and every one of you for your support during this conversion the weekend of October 15 and 16. This change was the culmination of many years of strategic planning and months of training by every staff member involved in direct patient care as well as thousands of support staff. From all indications so far, the conversion’s gone smoothly, and each of you has played a part in this success. Thank you for your continued patience as we all become more familiar with this new system. Many support services are in place to assist you, so I encourage you to take advantage of them.

As part of the care team, we all know the benefits that IHIS offers us. But remember, too, that it allows our patients to be more active participants in their own care, which is one of the pillars of our P4 model at Ohio State, P for Participation. Through OSUMyChart, our patients can communicate with us more effectively, access their records and their test results. They can request prescription renewals and review their health history. Encourage your patients to learn more by going to the Medical Center’s web site and clicking on the OSUMyChart link near the bottom of the page. And, encourage them to to sign up for OSUMyChart by speaking with their OSU primary care team. It will benefit them and all of us in the long run.

Speaking of P4 Medicine, the Medical Center hosted the fourth annual Johanna and Ralph DeStefano National Personalized Health Care Conference earlier this month over at the Blackwell Inn. The conference sold-out again this year, with every seat taken by interested researchers, physicians, government officials and industry leaders, all there to hear thought-provoking speakers and panel discussions about the Future of P4 Medicine and Its Impact on Patient Care.

A number of our faculty and staff spoke at the conference, and the staff from The Blackwell and our Center for Personalized Health Care did an excellent job coordinating all of the details necessary to host a world-class national conference like this one. Congratulations especially to Clay Marsh, Amy Erlich and the entire CPHC team for continuing Ohio State’s leadership role in prompting the national dialogue around P4 Medicine. The conference helps to position Ohio as one of the leading centers for advancing national healthcare reform. You can watch presentations from the conference and even offer your opinions on the topics discussed by visiting the Medical Center’s P4 Medicine blog at phc.osumc.edu.

I’m also proud to share with you that the University HealthSystem Consortium named OSU Medical Center one of the top 10 academic medical centers in the nation for quality and safe patient care. The UHC surveys more than 100 academic medical centers and 250 affiliated hospitals each year, and we’ve always ranked high, but this year we broke into the top 10. Congratulations to all of you for this outstanding achievement. It recognizes the tremendous effort you put forth every day to provide safe, high-quality care to every patient who comes through our doors.

And, as my last item of business, I want to let all of you know that we’ve welcomed two new outstanding leaders to our Medical Center team this month. Please join me in welcoming Marti Taylor as the new executive director of the Ross Heart Hospital and chief operating officer of the OSU Heart and Vascular Center. Marti comes to Ohio State by way of Duke University, where she served as the associate vice president for cardiovascular services.

And, please join me in welcoming Amanda Lucas, who joins our team as the new executive director for OSU Harding Hospital. Amanda has been at Nationwide Children’s Hospital since 2006, where she administrated the joint programs in behavioral health between Nationwide Children’s and Harding Hospital. Please join me in welcoming Marti and Amanda.

As always, we have a lot to be proud of, and certainly we still have a lot to do together!

Keep on supporting each other as you master IHIS, and keep cheering on the Buckeye football team, as they work their way through a challenging year. Thanks for all you do every day to improve people’s lives and have a great month.
