HI! This week, I am proud to join you in celebrating the 10th anniversary of OSU Harding Hospital, and take time to honor a legacy that spans nearly a century. I’m told the 10th anniversary is the “tin” anniversary, representing a marriage that has been flexible and durable. It can bend without being broken. In fact, that does describe our OSU Harding Hospital very well.

Since 1916 when Dr. George T. Harding II founded a hospital in Worthington, Ohio, the Harding name has been synonymous with leadership in mental health care and education.

That leadership became even stronger in 1999, as The Ohio State University Medical Center and Harding Hospital united their services. Today OSU Harding Hospital continues to advance research, education and patient care in mental health. The hospital is the only academic program in central Ohio with child, adolescent, adult and geriatric inpatient services. And, through the continued efforts of its dedicated staff, OSU Harding Hospital will provide leading-edge care well into the future. I know that Dr. Radu Saveanu, who has led OSU Harding Hospital and Ohio State’s Department of Psychiatry for the past decade, takes pride in these advancements and I’d like to thank him and his entire team for all they do to help us create the future of medicine here at Ohio State today.

For example, in the past year, OSU Harding has launched the Stress, Trauma and Resilience, or STAR, program, which serves as a resource for local community providers to address the needs of those suffering from untreated emotional trauma, caused by events such as automobile accidents, serious illness or unemployment. The program is planning to offer additional trauma-specific staff training in the Emergency Department and Surgical Intensive Care Unit, they’ll provide additional help with patients and families in these areas, and they’ll organize workshops for staff and community-based service providers. The STAR program will also conduct research on the causes of and treatment approaches for psychological trauma.

OSU Harding staff and Psychiatry faculty are also establishing exciting collaborations across the Medical Center, such as the depression-screening program at Ross Heart Hospital, started by members of Psychiatry and Cardiovascular Medicine. This team is exploring a recognized link between depression and impaired outcomes for heart patients, to find ways to improve the well-being of our patients. I also look forward to the results of multidisciplinary efforts by the Department of Neurosurgery’s Dr. Ali Rezai and his team’s work with deep-brain stimulation in the treatment of depression and other neurological disorders.

With both a storied past and an exciting future, we have much to celebrate at OSU Harding Hospital. I invite you to join me and your colleagues for the hospital’s 10th anniversary celebration on Tuesday, November 3rd in the OSU Harding Hospital Gymnasium. We’re offering two events, from noon to 2 p.m. and again from 5 to 7 p.m., to make sure we can accommodate as many people’s schedules as possible. Help us celebrate a program that includes rousing music from the OSU Alumni Band, video presentations and refreshments. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Well, have a great week.
