Dr. Gabbe talks about the creation of the Psychological Trauma Program and how it supports our mission of personalized care.
Hi! Stress and stress-related conditions are rising in both incidence and prevalence in today’s society. Nearly half of all hospital admissions are in some way stress related and acute stress disorders are often under diagnosed or go untreated. But, a new program at OSU has been designed to address the needs of those who suffer from a wide range of stress disorders. These individuals include victims of crime, abuse, accidents, war and other devastating life experiences.
The OSU Psychological Trauma Program will bring together the critical resources required for compassionate and innovative care to treat those among us who are pained by the effects of untreated trauma.
While many patients are treated for their physical wounds, some are affected by their past experiences and remain unable to function normally. The mission of Ohio State’s Psychological Trauma Program is to improve the quality of life for individuals experiencing psychological trauma through innovations in research, education, patient care and service.
We celebrated the creation of the program a few weeks ago when we welcomed Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, an internationally recognized leader in trauma care and research for a special grand rounds presentation. He shared information on the effects of untreated trauma and how we, as a caring university community, can respond to this need in new and exciting ways.
Our Psychological Trauma Program will provide personalized care based on an individual’s unique history, biology, behavior and environment while offering maximum support to victims and their families. It will serve as a resource for trauma education and training for faculty and professionals around the region and will promote trauma research through the work of world-class scientists.
Our team brings together a wealth of expertise in the areas of psychiatry, mental health administration, education, training, research, project development and community outreach. I’d like to thank Dr. Radu Saveanu and the entire team for their leadership and commitment to this important endeavor.
Working together we can make a difference for those suffering in our community and this new program is a great example of how we can do just that.
Well, have a great week!
