Education Partnership

Ohio State has developed several programs to inform young people about futures in medicine, encourage interest in the fundamentals of academic medicine – science and mathematics – and expose them to medical scenarios. Here are just a few of the programs that The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is proud to offer to students from the local community.

Metro Early College High School
Metro Early College High School is designed to serve students who want to a personalized and extraordinary learning experience that prepares them for a connected world where science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are the focus. Metro is a STEM high school operated by the Educational Council and Confederation of the 16 public school districts in Franklin County, in partnership with Battelle and The Ohio State University. Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center provides a Lunch and Learn event series and shadowing opportunities.

East High School Health Academy   
Together we organize field trips for juniors and seniors, and host breakfasts for high school students who have excelled in the health sciences.

Fort Hayes Metropolitan High School 
The Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State is a member of the school’s advisory board. Fort Hayes is one of Ohio State's Medical Center Adopt-a-Schools.

Math and Science Club
Students in elementary, middle and high school are given an opportunity to enhance their math and science skills through club participation.

MD Camp
The goal of this intensive, three-week summer camp is to inspire interest in health careers among high school juniors and seniors whose ethnic groups have traditionally been under-represented in medicine.

Partners in Education   
Participants work diligently to increase student awareness of career opportunities in health care through field trips, speakers, mentoring, shadowing and honors breakfasts. They also aim to increase awareness of OSUMC health services among academically gifted students.

Principals Externships   
Our externships allow Columbus City Schools principals to learn what happens when students or their family members are hospitalized or are diagnosed with an illness, providing them with the skills and tools to address these issues with their students.

School Supply Drive
The Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State organizes a systemwide school supply drive for Ohio State's Medical Center Adopt-a-Schools – Literature Based Alternative School at Hubbard, East Pilgrim, Fort Hayes and East High School.

So You Want to Be A Doctor
Ohio State's Medical Center provides 15 middle school youth with the opportunity to explore the College of Medicine and the clinical skills center.

Summer Job Program
Each summer, the Medical Center provides a work site for 30 youths between the ages of 16-18 years for a six-week job placement. Youths came from Godman Guild and are placed in departments within Ohio State's Medical Center to learn job skills. In 2007, the Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State received the Partnering Employer of the Year Award from Godman Guild at their closing summer ceremony.
