Economic Impact

The Ohio State University Medical Center’s phenomenal growth in all three of our mission areas – research, education and patient care – has created a community impact of a different kind: Job growth. The 3,700 new jobs added at the Medical Center over the past six years represent the largest number added during this period by any employer in the region.

This growth also is indirectly responsible for an additional 4,400 jobs in the greater Columbus area. Each new job we add helps us deliver on our promise of personalized health care and increases health access for more people in our community and region.

The Medical Center represents the largest concentration of employment at Ohio State, with nearly a third more employees than all other areas of the University combined. This immense growth has a significant financial impact – Ohio State’s effect on the regional economy approaches $1.4 billion annually, according to a study by the Columbus Chamber of Commerce.

As the area’s only academic medical center, the depth and breadth of our research mission is a key contributor to the economic growth of central Ohio, too. Our ability to attract research grants brings an influx of money from outside the region. Industry models from the Chamber show that for each $100 spent on research endeavors, another $222.05 is generated in the local economy. That is a significant effect when you consider that our research awards increased to $190.7 million in 2007 from $80.6 million in 2000.

The senior researchers we recruit from around the world are bringing more than increased research funds. These men and women are often followed by additional research staff and their families. In many instances, the Medical Center is recruiting the equivalent of a small business enterprise, rather than a single person.
