Community Health Services 

The Ohio State University Medical Center has a long tradition of serving our community regardless of race, age, faith or ability to pay. In fiscal year 2007, Ohio State's Medical Center contributed more than $127 million in charity care and benefits to the community. We believe that the best way to improve the health of our communities is through collaboration.

Abrete Sesamo
Abrete Sesamo provides workshops in the community help limited-English-speaking Latinos learn how to use and access local healthcare services.

African American Male Mentoring Panel
The Mentoring Panel works to provide positive role models and mentoring opportunities to African-American males, ages 14-18, with the goal of increasing student awareness of career opportunities in health care.

Asian Health Initiative
This initiative maintains the Asian Health Center at the OSU Rardin Family Practice Center to improve the health of medically underserved Asian populations in central Ohio. They also provide the funding for lab work and a part-time staff person.

Bridge Program
The Bridge Program at University Hospital East Family Medicine provides free and much-needed health care to area women.

Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence-Health Task Force
This task force creates and implements training for healthcare professionals to recognize the symptoms of domestic violence and make appropriate referrals. Project SAFE, a program designed to protect pregnant women from abuse, was started at OSUMC and has been expanded to six central Ohio hospitals and clinics.

Community Day at University Hospital East
We are pleased to be able to offer health screenings, education and fellowship for Columbus’ Near East Side community at this annual event.

Community Health Risk Assessment
The data gathered from the assessment provides valuable information on the health status of people in central Ohio, with information on many health issues in order to increase the quality of information available to healthcare providers and researchers.

Council on Healthy Mothers and Babies
OSUMC participates with other hospital systems to improve pregnancy outcomes and decrease infant mortality. The council provides wait-time studies, Pregnancy Care Capacity Roundtables and Pregnancy Care Connection.

East High School Health Academy   
Together with our partners, we organize field trips for juniors and seniors, and host breakfasts for high school students who have excelled in the health sciences. La Clínica Latina
Through the clinic, we are able to provide medical care for Latino residents in central Ohio along with service learning opportunities for College of Medicine and Nursing students.

Math and Science Club
Students in elementary, middle and high school are given a rare opportunity to enhance their math and science skills through club participation.

MD Camp   
The goal of this intensive, three-week summer camp is to inspire interest in health careers among high school juniors and seniors whose ethnic groups have traditionally been under-represented in medicine.

Men’s Health Initiative   
Providing education to African-American men about disease prevention, early detection and clinical trials through a series of men’s health programs, this program is held in conjunction with televised sporting events to maximize interest and attendance.

The economic and cultural vitality of Columbus’ Near East Side and the health of its residents have been greatly enriched by the programs developed through the collaboration of OSUMC and local business leaders.

New Albany Classic Invitational Grand Prix and Family Day   
OSUMC is a member of the Health Care Task Force, which is working with the Central Ohio Trauma System to implement a uniform screening protocol for family violence. This event benefits the Coalition Against Family Violence.

Ohio Asthma Coalition
Our staffmembers chair this coalition, which created a statewide asthma plan. In addition, the group provides advocacy for asthma programs.

Partners in Education   
Participants work diligently to increase student awareness of career opportunities in health care through field trips, speakers, mentoring, shadowing and honors breakfasts. They also aim to increase awareness of OSUMC health services among academically gifted students.

Principals Externships   
Our externships allow Columbus Public School principals to learn what happens when students or their family members are hospitalized or are diagnosed with an illness, providing them with the skills and tools to address these issues with their students.

Project Love   
Project Love provides shared nurse coverage as part of the childhood immunization project in order to increase the number of children receiving immunizations in Franklin county.

OSUMC staff volunteer to participate in this reading program at Hubbard Elementary School.

Research and Evaluations Enhancement Program (REEP)   
Participants in REEP provide guidelines for research on ethnic and cultural health issues.

Stable Cradle Project   
New mothers recovering from substance abuse can participate in this outpatient drug treatment program and receive parenting education. The program also sponsors a social worker for participating churches.

United Way Councils   
Ohio State’s Medical Center is involved in many of United Way’s councils. The Health Vision Council seeks to improve the health of the community. The Neighborhood and Race Relations & Diversity Vision Councils focus on building vibrant neighborhoods, increasing neighborhood pride and addressing racial health disparities by funding CARE Columbus, a cultural competency training program for healthcare providers.

Urban Residency Program   
In this program, OSUMC physicians are trained to care for the unique needs of people living in urban areas who might otherwise have to travel out of their community to obtain medical treatment. Ohio State’s program is one of the first in the country to gear resources specifically to an urban population.

Weinland Program Health and Wellness Project   
Project volunteers evaluate and provide mental health and health services at Weinland Elementary School.

Women Coming Together   
Women Coming Together is an annual conference during Women’s HealthMonth (May) that focuses on the health issues and unmet needs of African-American, Asian, Latina, Appalachian and Native American women.

OSUMC sponsors a health center that provides community educational events and screenings, a community health nurse one day each week, an exercise physiologist to conduct aerobic classes for seniors and a van for transportation.
