About Me
I have been a practicing family physician for more than 30 years. As chair of the Department of Family Medicine at The Ohio State University, I believe in shared decision-making so that patients are engaged in their health care.
I love family medicine because it allows me to have a long-term doctor-patient relationship with a variety of individuals with different ages, different diseases, and different perspectives and experiences.
In addition to my clinical work, I am a member of the Cancer Control Program at the OSUCCC – James, where my research focuses on education, clinical practice and administration.
I was the principal investigator on a Health Resources & Services Administration grant to work on interprofessional education with the College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the College of Pharmacy, the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and the College of Social Work. I am also the co-investigator on a nursing grant that was recently submitted to develop a residency program for advanced practices nurses in primary care.
I enjoy the people that I work with at Ohio State and the fact that we look forward to making things better for our patients. I also like that we’re an integrated health care system, where all records are in the same place with computer access from any of our sites. This allows doctors to view a patient’s records and communicate electronically, which supports patient engagement.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.

Dr Welker has been my Dr for over 40 years and is the best! She genuinely cares about me as a patient and she has a wonderful disposition. I will be lost when she retires .

Provider never said how long I should take the medication and seemed annoyed . Follow up questions were initially resoonded to but only partially answered. Follow ups with insurance were never confirmed . Provider did not come across as someone who liked her job

I've been having pain in my foot. She made suggestions on relieving the pain that was due to a previous surgery. She offered non surgical suggestions when I told her I don't want another surgery.
Care provider gave one option/alternative to colonoscopy - Cologuard. I wish we would have talked about FIT test, too.
Mary was very rude and short with me. I was in the office because I was having kidney issues and thought I might have a UTI. Dr. Wood couldn't get me in to be seen so they scheduled me with Mary. She was asking me about medicine I was talking. IOne of the medications (I was prescribed for an upcoming colonoscopy) she didn't even know what it was used for. She was rude. Even belittled me by asking if I even wiped off when I gave my urine sample. I did indeed have a UTI when my results came back from the lab. My blood pressure was low. It was 90/60. I asked about that and she didn't even listen to me. Beside finally getting something for the UTI it was a waste. I told Dr. Wood I will NEVER she her again!!!

Dr. Welker has been my doctor since I was young, and I am 74. I am very satisfied with her care, feel confident she knows my medical history and am glad she is a doctor who doesn't immediately prescribe drugs for me. She knows I prefer to avoid them. She takes time answering my questions, gives me practical advice on diet, exercise, etc. And alleviates my health worries. She always takes my concerns seriously. I hope she doesn't retire for a long time!

She reviewed the issues I had on arrival and explained what course of action I could take to alleviate the problems. She showed genuine concern and told me to call or message if the suggestions didn't get rid of my hives. I messaged her this morning and she responded almost immediately telling me the next course of action.

The provider did not have a pleasant demeanor. She was rude to me after asking questions about my profession and interestingly after I identified my method of birth control. She was condescending in regards to my birth control method, which is based on my religious beliefs. Additionally, she asked if I had received the Covid vaccine, which I have. She then demanded, this is not an exaggeration, to see my vaccination cards. I provided them to her, because I carry them. I got the impression she didn't believe me. It was incredibly off putting and strange.
